서예의 자리, 다시 묻다.

서예는 오랜 시간 우리 문화의 중심에서 정신과 미감을 담아온 예술이다. 그러나 오늘날 서예는 전통의 깊이에도 불구하고 예술 시장 안에서 충분한 자리를 확보하지 못한 채, 점점 더 좁아지는 관람층과 유통 구조 속에서 어려움을 겪고 있다. 작품은 존재하지만 시장은 작고, 작가는 많지만 만남의 기회는 많지 않다. 이러한 현실 속에서 서예는 다시 질문을 던진다. 지금, 서예는 어떻게 사람들과 만나야 하는가.

이번 〈한글 소품전 Market〉은 그 질문에서 출발한 실험적 전시이다. 서예를 보다 가깝게, 보다 열린 방식으로 관객과 연결해 보고자 하는 작은 시도다. ‘시장(Market)’이라는 단어를 전면에 내세운 것은 단순한 판매의 의미를 넘어, 예술과 사람, 작품과 생활이 자연스럽게 만나는 장(場)을 상상했기 때문이다.

이번 전시는 특히 한글 서예 소품에 주목한다. 크기와 형식을 낮추고, 가격의 문턱을 낮추며, 관람과 소장의 거리를 줄였다. 거대한 작품과 권위적인 전시 방식에서 벗어나, 일상 가까이에서 서예를 만날 수 있는 가능성을 탐색한다. 이는 서예의 본질을 가볍게 하려는 시도가 아니라, 오히려 서예가 지닌 생명력을 새로운 환경 속에서 다시 움직이게 하려는 하나의 방법이다.

여기에 참여한 작가들은 각자의 필법과 감각으로 한글의 조형성과 정신을 풀어내며, 전통의 축적 위에서 또 다른 가능성을 실험하고 있다. 이 작은 작품들은 단순한 소품이 아니라, 서예가 오늘의 사회와 어떻게 관계 맺을 수 있는지를 묻는 하나의 제안이기도 하다.

〈한글 소품전 Market>은 완성된 해답이라기보다 하나의 실험이다. 서예가 예술 시장과 어떤 방식으로 만날 수 있는지, 또 관객이 서예를 어떤 방식으로 일상 속에서 경험할 수 있는지를 함께 탐색하는 자리이다. 이 작은 시도가 서예와 관객 사이의 거리를 조금 더 가깝게 만들고, 서예가 새로운 유통과 감상의 길을 발견하는 계기가 되기를 기대한다.

전통의 깊이와 오늘의 감각이 만나는 이 자리에서, 서예가 다시 사람들 속으로 걸어 들어가는 순간을 함께해 주길 바라는 마음이다.

Reconsidering the Place of Calligraphy

Calligraphy has long stood at the heart of our culture, embodying both spirit and aesthetic sensibility. Yet today, despite the depth of its tradition, calligraphy struggles to secure a firm place within the contemporary art market. The audience continues to narrow, and the structures for circulation remain limited. Works exist, and many artists continue to create, but opportunities for meaningful encounters between art and audience are not as abundant. In this reality, calligraphy poses a renewed question: How should calligraphy meet people today?

The exhibition 〈Hangul Small Works Exhibition: Market〉 begins from this very question. It is an experimental attempt to connect calligraphy with audiences in a more accessible and open way. By foregrounding the word “Market,” the exhibition does not merely suggest the act of selling, but rather imagines a space where art and people, works and everyday life, can meet naturally.

This exhibition focuses particularly on small-scale Hangul calligraphy works. By reducing scale and format, lowering price barriers, and narrowing the distance between viewing and collecting, it seeks to explore the possibility of encountering calligraphy within everyday life. This is not an attempt to diminish the essence of calligraphy; rather, it is an effort to activate the vitality inherent in the art form within a new environment.

The participating artists interpret the formative beauty and spirit of Hangul through their individual brushwork and sensibilities, experimenting with new possibilities grounded in the accumulation of tradition. These small works are not merely decorative pieces; they are proposals that ask how calligraphy might engage with contemporary society.

〈Hangul Small Works Exhibition: Market〉 is therefore not a finished answer but an experiment. It is a space for exploring how calligraphy might meet the art market and how audiences might experience calligraphy within their daily lives. We hope that this modest attempt will bring calligraphy and audiences a little closer together, and that it may help discover new paths for the circulation and appreciation of calligraphy.
